Help and subsidies for climate adaptation

Read about various opportunities for discounts and subsidies for climate-adapting your property.

Check your insurance

The first thing you should do is to check your insurance. Are your sufficiently covered in the event of flooding or a storm? Understand your own responsibility, and what the insurance company requires you to do to limit damage to your home.

Your home insurance does not cover flooding caused by storm surges or water from watercourses. In certain cases, you can get compensation from the Danish Natural Hazards Council.

Home insurance discounts

Look into whether you can get a discount on your insurance if you climate-proof your house. For example, many insurance companies offer discounts on home insurance if you have reduced the risk of damage to your house and its vulnerability to cloudbursts.

You may be eligible to a discount if you install a backflow blocker or pump well. Having a professional company perform a climate resilience assessment of your home and then following their recommendations can also qualify you for discounts.

There may also be a discount on home insurance if your municipality has established local protection against cloudbursts. So, always remember to ask your insurance company.

Reimbursement of connection fee

Some utilities will pay back a certain amount of the sewer system connection fee if you disconnect your stormwater runoff from the sewer. In some places you can get up to 40% of the connection fee reimbursed. This corresponds to around DKK 20-25,000, depending on the size of the fee and the percentage reimbursed by your utility company.

Contact your municipality or utility company to find out about your subsidy options if you are considering installing a dry well or similar on your property. Remember that you will need the municipality's permission to install a dry well.
